The Semantic layer is the technology layer that does three important things. First, it pre-joins the data together so the BI tools can conveniently, accurately, and quickly find the information they need. Second, it’s functions are used by us to derive and precalculate certain metrics such as loss ratios, incurred values, etc. so they are always calculated correctly. Third, because we use the semantic layer to pre-join, derive, and pre-calculate information, it is very convenient for end users (who wish to perform ad-hoc queries) to access the information with confidence and convenience by selecting from simple lists of available data rather than writing complex queries.
Business rules describe how alerts are identified, aggregated and presented. They describe data that is to be exposed to individuals or groups of users, report content, look and feel, how information is aligned organizationally, how information and awareness is escalated through the organization, security requirements, and report distribution. These rules are configured into the BI tools and made a part of the BI Content.
BI content ( reports, dashboards, scorecards, alerts), is the user experience. While we have a large inventory of BI content already designed and available, it is most often customized to meet your specific needs and deployed to incorporate embedded business rules. Content will be linked together to allow drilling to lower levels of detail and intelligent transfer to other content where parameters are automatically passed. All of this is done to provide a seamless and effective user experience.
